La Palma is a very beautiful and green Canary island, 85 km
west of Tenerife, thankfully free of the mass tourism of islands like Tenerife and Gran
Canaria. It is a tranquil and friendly island, ideal for touring, for walkers and nature lovers. It is also
a good place to escape bustle, do gentle exploration or just relax and read.
Generally the island is warm in winter, but escapes the extremes of heat in
summer and is considered to have "spring" weather all year round
(yearly daytime average 23 deg.C).
Bananas and other tropical fruit grow in abundance on the island. The
many walking routes on La Palma are very well maintained and waymarked and suit
walkers of all standards. The longest and highest routes are challenging
expeditions in their own right. La Palma has black volcanic sand beaches, some
of which are very wild and beautiful and few of which are ever crowded. Its
coastal and inland scenery and flora are spectacular and the island is host to:
the National Park of the Caldera de Taburiente (the largest Caldera in the
World); UNESCO Biosphere Reserves and the International Astrophysical Laboratory
on the Roque de Los Muchachos, the island's highest point. La Palma is
accessible directly by air travel from London and Manchester, Madrid, German airports or Schipol,
Holland, by frequent inter-island flights from Tenerife or Gran Canaria and by ferry from Tenerife
(Los Christianos). More information about the island is available here
Our 2008 rental price has now been held for a third year running

The house: upper courtyard terrace & the lower terrace
Casa Jacaranda is the holiday home of an English couple and offers guests privacy in a secluded setting in the old part of the village of Puntallana, just 15 mins north of Santa Cruz using the island's main route - the LP1. This means that access from the airport and sea port is quick and easy when you arrive on La Palma! Casa Jacaranda is a traditional style Canary Island house (thick stone walls, pan-tiled roof, very attractive woodwork, fully shuttered windows and doors). It is in consequence cool inside in summer heat! The original building is at least 100 years old. From its two terraces you can look out to sea, watch the sunrise over the Atlantic Ocean and get occasional views of Tenerife 85 km away. Close by is the wild and spectacular beach of Playa Nogales. A supermarket is a few minutes walk away and restaurants can be found within 5 - 7 mins drive.

Sunrise & sunset views from the lower terrace, Mount Teide on Tenerife is visible in the
distance

Very spacious living room (high roof with exposed beams) with open hearth fireplace

From left to right - dining area - kitchen - bathroom
Double bedroom - King Size Bed
The property is located
in the historic part of the village (Casco Antigua), high above an historic tiny plaza
with springs, dedicated to St John. It is entered via a passageway leading to an
enclosed terrace/courtyard, making it unusually secluded and private.
The kitchen is a separate room near the dining area, with a view out to sea and a window / hatch to the upper terrace for dining outside. It has a 4-burner gas hob, a separate electric grill, a toaster, a microwave, a large refrigerator with freezing compartment, a small (3 kg) washing machine and a good range of utensils and crockery.
The living room is extremely spacious with high, exposed canary pine roof timbers and plenty of seating and storage space. It has a dining area for 4-6 people, a comfortable sofa which converts quickly to a double bed, bookshelves with a good range of paperbacks, television with a DVD player, a music centre (tapes and radio) and a traditional open log-burning hearth for cool winter evenings.
The bedroom has a king size double bed (unusual on the island), a built-in wardrobe with storage space over and bedside draw units.
The bathroom is fully tiled with a bath with shower over, WC pedestal and wash hand basin. The area above the bathroom is reached by a ladder. There are two mattresses which means that this area can be used as a sleeping platform if desired (although there is also the double sofa bed).
Outside there are 2 terraces with external
lighting which give views out to sea
and open countryside Both terraces are quite private and not overlooked. The upper
courtyard/terrace offers both sun and shade (from 2 jacaranda trees and a tiled roof
canopy). The lower terrace is a morning suntrap which is ideal for lazing or meals
outside. There is a good sized barbecue for cooking outside.

Alternative UK Flights
For holidays starting on the day of your choice and of any length, you have the option to go via Madrid (Bajaras airport) , from which IBERIA has regular scheduled flights to La Palma. From London Heathrow or Gatwick these are either 1 stop (London - Madrid -La Palma) or 2 stops (London - Madrid - Tenerife North-La Palma) depending on the day of departure. You can book a cheap flight to Madrid with several companies, for example Easyjet.
You arrive on La Palma at 16:25 From other UK airports you can also go via Madrid, but you do need a morning flight to make the connection to the IBERIA flight to La Palma (which leaves at 14:30). You can look up flights using the web links below or you can quickly search and book flights using the Opodo flight search facility. YOUR DESTINATION AIRPORT IS SANTA CRUZ DE LA PALMA (SPC)
Almost all UK airports fly charters to Tenerife South (TFS, Reine Sofia airport). From Tenerife the daily Fred Olsen fast ferry service (Benchijigua Express) sails from Los Christianos, direct to Santa Cruz in La Palma. The ferry crossing takes 2 hours and can carry vehicles. It leaves Los Christianos at 20:00 and La Palma at 06:30. These sailing times should allow plenty of time to connect with daytime international flights. A taxi from the airport will bring you to Los Christianos Quay (or you could even hire a vehicle in Tenerife and take this across to use on the island). You can book the ferry online if you wish.
Using inter-island flights (Binter Canarias or Islas Airways) you can get to La Palma from the other Canary islands, Gran Canaria and Tenerife in particular. Note that flights mainly go to and from Tenerife North Airport (TFN). Flight time Tenerife North - La Palma is 20 mins. See more information
.From Amsterdam (Schiphol) with one of the cheap carriers, then Amsterdam to La Palma with or Martinair. Transavia flights can be booked online via their website Transavia.
More information & timetables..............
Although you can get to Casa Jacaranda and get around using public transport and the occasional taxi, a car is the best option for touring the island. We can arrange car hire on the island for you if you wish, alternatively there are a large number of car hire options you can book yourself on-line (you will be able to check the price, availability and options immediately).
