The house: upper courtyard terrace & the lower terrace
Casa Jacaranda is the holiday home of an English couple and offers guests privacy in a secluded setting in the old part of the village of Puntallana, just 15 mins from the capital, Santa Cruz; 20 mins from the airport. This means that access from the air and sea ports is quick and easy when you arrive on La Palma!
Casa Jacaranda is a traditional style Canary Island house (thick stone walls, pan-tiled roof, very attractive woodwork, fully shuttered windows and doors). It is in consequence cool inside in summer heat! The original building is at least 100 years old. From its two terraces you can look out to sea, watch the sunrise over the Atlantic Ocean and get glimpses of Mount Teide on Tenerife 85 km away. A supermarket, general stores and a bars & a cafe are a few minutes walk and restaurants can be found within 5 - 7 mins drive. You can walk from our door to several of the island's way-marked trails. Close at hand is the wild and spectacular beach of Playa Nogales and the small beach of Puerto Trigo.
We feel that Casa Jacaranda is in one of the best locations for holidaymakers wanting to explore the island of La Palma and get a feel for island culture - you will be amongst the local people, not tourists. This island is all about spectacular mountain and coastal scenery for people wanting to tour and walk. There are marvelous footpaths within easy reach of Casa Jacaranda for ramblers of all standards. Compared with the larger Canary islands to the east it is unspoilt. Whilst it has a modern infrastructure (good roads and facilities) it retains a traditional Spanish culture with influences from Venezuela and Cuba. From Casa Jacaranda you have easy road access to the old colonial capital (Santa Cruz) and the dramatic North of the island. It is very easy to get into the foothills of the mountain chain that runs the length of La Palma. These provide exciting walking. It's easy to reach the summit of the island by the nearby mountain road that runs up to Roque de Los Muchachos. Although we ourselves do not live permanently on the island, our guests are met and supported by a Dutch resident who runs a business on La Palma and is a real island expert, contributing to the write-ups on La Palma and other islands in the Sunflower walking Guides to the Canaries. The northeast of the island where we are located is in the older, more traditional part of La Palma, but it is easy to explore the west side too. From Santa Cruz you can reach the west coast in 30 mins using road tunnels that penetrate the mountain chain. But don't just take our word for it - read the comments of our satisfied guests!

Sunrise & sunset views from the lower terrace, Mount Teide on Tenerife is visible in the
distance

Very spacious living room (high roof with exposed beams) with open hearth fireplace

From left to right - dining area - kitchen - bathroom
Double bedroom - King Size Bed
The property is located
in the old part of the village (Casco Antigua), high above an historic tiny plaza
with springs, dedicated to St John. It is entered via a passageway leading to an
enclosed terrace/courtyard, making it unusually secluded and private.
The kitchen is a separate room near the dining area, with a view out to sea and a window / hatch to the upper terrace for dining outside. It has a 4-burner gas hob, a separate electric grill, a toaster, a microwave cooker, a large refrigerator with freezing compartment, a small (3 kg) washing machine and a good range of utensils and crockery.
The living room is extremely spacious with high, exposed canary pine roof timbers and plenty of seating and storage space. It has a dining area with space for 4-6 people, a comfortable sofa which converts quickly to a double bed, bookshelves with a good range of paperbacks, satellite television with a very wide range of channels available in addition to Canary islands TV, a DVD player, a music centre (CD, tape and radio) and a traditional open log-burning hearth for cool winter evenings.
The bedroom has a king size double bed (unusual in La Palma rental accommodation), a built-in wardrobe with storage space over and bedside draw units.
The bathroom is fully tiled with a bath with shower over, WC and wash hand basin. The area above the bathroom is reached by a ladder. There are two mattresses which means that this area can be used as a sleeping platform if desired (although there is also the double sofa bed).
Outside there are 2 terraces with external
lighting which give views out to sea
and open countryside Both terraces are quite private and not overlooked. The upper
courtyard/terrace offers both sun and shade (from 2 jacaranda trees and a tiled roof
canopy). The lower terrace is a morning suntrap which is ideal for lazing or meals
outside. There is a good sized barbecue for cooking outside.
